Oily dandruff is only found on the scalp. It is a common and harmless condition but one that can have a serious effect on everyday life due to its highly visible character. You shouldn’t feel guilty as it can occur on all hair types and its onset is unrelated to your personal hygiene. Several factors can contribute to the persistence and recurrence of dandruff: stress, pollution, unsuitable hair care or even hormonal imbalances. Its origin, however, is always a hypersecretion of sebum, boosting the proliferation of a yeast naturally present on the scalp. This yeast becomes irritating, weakens the skin barrier and provokes a defence reaction from your scalp. Large, yellowish, thick, sticky scales then appear on the hair, sometimes accompanied by itching. Dandruff tends to be a recurrent condition and you should therefore adopt a rigorous scalp cleansing routine. Use suitable anti-loose dandruff shampoo that target excess sebum and rebalance local microbial flora.
