Local therapies to treat psoriasis

Local treatments, i.e. creams, ointments and other gels, are frequently used to relieve psoriasis symptoms. This is often the first type of treatment a dermatologist will prescribe. Not all these treatments are the same and there are several categories of local psoriasis treatments.

Local treatment categories

Topical corticosteroids

This is the most common and effective therapeutic class for treating inflammatory skin diseases such as eczema or psoriasis. Topical corticosteroids have been around for several decades and their action is well-recognized, however they are often underused due to their poor reputation. It is true that they can have adverse effects, such as the thinning and weakening of the skin, the appearance of stretch marks, etc. but these reactions are very rare and do not occur if the treatment is applied in accordance with medical advice.

Vitamin D derivatives

Alone or in combination with topical corticosteroids, mainly target keratinocyte differentiation. They can irritate the skin at the start of treatment but this should not be used as an excuse to stop taking them!

Topical retinoids

Other classes of local psoriasis treatment available include topical retinoids, keratolytics and of course hydrating creams. It is strongly recommended to use hydrating creams as a follow-up to other local treatments to increase skin tolerance and to reduce the frequency of psoriasis flare-ups.

Effective treatments

Patients rarely enjoy having to apply local psoriasis treatments, for reasons such as lack of time, unpleasant textures, problems getting dressed or applying make-up afterward, the feeling that "it doesn't work", the weariness after months or even years of applying creams. And yet, these treatments are perfectly suitable and effective in many cases of mild to moderate psoriasis.

At the same time, it is essential to understand the benefits of each product, the different textures and directions for use so that you can follow the treatment in complete piece of mind and see an improvement in your skin's condition fairly quickly.
